Domaine La Calmette
Domaine La Calmette, Resurgences, Cahors, Noual/Sauvignon Blanc/Chenin Blanc/Sylvaner, 2021
Resurgences is a fantastic white wine coming out of Cahors in the south west of France. Cahors is most famously known for producing Malbec and in fact Domaine La Calmette makes a killer Malbec but honestly this white wine is really the diamond in the rough. The wine is saline forward, stony and bright. It’s incredibly exciting, especially coming from this part of France, I really think its going to blow your mind. The vineyards are on a side of a hill where there are lots of alluvial deposits from a river, which is what the white wine grape’s vines have taken to the most. Some of the grapes are direct press and some have a few days of maceration with their skins, but I would never call this an orange wine; the extra maceration just adds texture and a joie de vivre to the wine. There’s a limestone freshness, like it just rained, and the sun is coming out and we all have this wine outside standing on wet stones listening to the birds. It’s a little quiet slice of heaven.
