Jose Gil, Vinedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja, Spain, Tempranillo/ Grenache, 2021
We have a masterpiece on our hands folks, a real Rioja treat. Jose Gil, who grew up in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja is a descendent of a multi-generational family of wine growers that have always followed the traditional style of making wine in Rioja. The emphasis is put on the farming and the cultivation of epic grapes which will then translate into epic wines instead of tinkering with the product in the cellar through manipulation. This wine is mostly tempranillo with a touch of grenache and also a tiny percentage of white wine varietals also in the mix. I would definitely decant this wine and once it gets a little oxygen it unfolds into this lovely optimistic wine that's plush and energetic with soft tannins and an abundance of red and purple fruits.
This wine should be decanted for an hour before drinking! If you don’t have a decanter you can use a clean glass vessel.
Pairing: Abondigas soup; short rib grilled cheese
