Quercecchio
Quercecchio, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy, Sangiovese, 2019
Gotta give it up for this old school, fabulous, seventies/eighties vibes label. The wine also cuts deep into the core of what real Brunello used to be. And I love it! When you hear that this wine is made by an eighty-seven year old woman who lives at the top of a hill in Tavernell, in the heart of Brunello, near Soldera and Gaja, it all starts to make sense and come into focus. This sangiovese is pure fruit and terroir. There is no new oak aging to additions to make this Brunello too plush or opulent. It’s bright and vibey, it’s old school, it’s the red wine that is calling out for bolognese like they were meant to be. Maria-Grazia, the maven behind the wine, is the 5th generation of her family to make wine. The wine is benchmarked by its lush deeply fruited and rooted body coupled with a bright acidity that is exactly the way Brunellos are supposed to sing.
