Marco Pezzuto
Marco Pezzuto, Ciafre, Roero, Piemonte, Italy, Nebbiolo, 2023
Marco's wines can be complex without being complicated as he once said to his importer. This is such a striking notion given that it states with confidence the authenticity of his craft. Complexity is not something that you can bestow on the wine, you need to understand the terroir and the grapes in order to coax it out. The Ciafre is the name of the hill that these old Nebbiolo vines are planted on. The man on the label playing the accordion is an homage to the past and a nod to the importance of folk music to the peasant culture that has a long history in the Roero region. Marco sometimes gathers friends to sing folk songs in the vines, the way his grandfather and his friends used to. The vines are clearly happy, this wine is incredible. It has amazing texture, finesse and embodies in some ways a perfect expression of Nebbiolo.
