Joan Rubio
Joan Rubio, La Petita, Catalunya, Spain, Xarel·lo/Sumoll Blanc/Malvasía de Sitges, 2022
Made from a blend of white wine grapes in Spain, the wine is like the perfect meeting of citrus and beeswax. It is absolutely beautiful, inside and out, and is a real testament to Joan Rubio who is one of the most thoughtful winemakers in the region. Joan is able to capture the expressiveness of his region; the power, energy and salinity that makes his wines so captivating. This white wine is complex but incredibly easy to drink; I think that is a testament to the 6 days of skin maceration on the xarel-lo grapes, however I would hardly call this an orange or skin contact wine. It’s solidly a white wine to me, however sometimes skin maceration can be used to tip the scale on a wine’s intentions into something more magical. And Beyond! I am captivated by La Petita aka the little one.
