Gregoire Hoppenot, Les Garants, Fleurie, Beaujolais, France, Gamay, 2023
Fleurie *might* just be one of the most beautiful places in the world to grow gamay. It falls within the appellation of Beaujolais and Fleurie is one of the ten recognized official zones - aka crus’s. It’s the most pretty, femme and songbird-esque when it comes to the style of gamay that is produced. If you are having a wine from Beaujolais it’s almost always going to be a red wine made from Gamay grapes. Gamay is thin skinned like pinot noir and expresses itself and bright, juicy, lush, and fun. Gregoire Hoppenot (what a name!) is a star, someone who has risen in the ranks of notable wine makers in the last ten years due to the passionate response of sommeliers obsessed with his wines. Les Garants is a single vineyard site in Fleurie and it has a hyper concentration of the awesome pink granite that the area is known for. The result is pow: juicy fruit energy and amazing aromatics. This wine is far from shy but she’s so chic wearing head to toe Miu Miu. Girls can dream!
